The Speaker, Kadima MK Dalia Itzik, called this week upon the Government of Israel to declare the coming year the “Year of the North.” She said that tourism from abroad and from Israel should be encouraged to the Galilee and northern Israel.

Her words are representative of widespread national sympathy for the hundreds or thousands who were forced to flee the north during the recent war and seek alternate housing in hotels and dormitories or with relatives and friends. Itzik herself mentioned the “hundreds of thousands of good citizens who helped out the people of the north.” read more

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Gush Katif and Northern Gaza expulsion victims at Nitzan Monday, “I know you are angry…. I know that you think that you need to be in Gush Katif. We think differently.” He insisted that more communities will be destroyed under his unilateral expulsion program.

The Prime Minister told the residents that he understands their difficulties and that the government “will solve the problems.” Many of the victims of the expulsions only recently have received their possessions that were stored in containers, and hundreds remain out of work. read more

In an open letter posted on a Gush Katif forum web site, Y. S. wrote, “I closed my business since the beginning of the battle and I don’t know what will happen. I never thought that I, a Haifa resident for 30 years, would be a refugee in my own land. read more

Gov’t Has Built Homes for Less Than Half of Expulsion Victims

The government has built only 803 new housing units for citizens expelled from their homes in the Gaza and northern Samaria regions last summer, according to Housing Ministry figures. More than 900 families have been forced into temporary housing.

Most of the new housing units were built on relatively small plots of land, of about 90 square meters compared to the 150 square meters most of the families enjoyed before the government demolished their communities. read more

Netzer-Hazani Expellees Ordered to Move to Caravilla Homes

Expellee families of Netzer-Hazani were instructed to leave their temporary dwellings and move to caravilla homes. They were informed they must vacate within a week due to the upcoming Shavuot holiday. At present, the expellees are living in guest houses in Kibbutz Chafetz Chaim and Ein Tzurim.

Responding to the eviction order, expellee families indicated they have no intention of complying, explaining many of the caravilla homes are not ready and lack infrastructure, including water hookup. Some do not have water faucets in the home, and there are open pools of water and construction debris scattered about. read more
